A FEW PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Before the
first cut.

Have a setup we haven’t covered?
Tell us about your workshop

What do I install, and where?

The ByteCut workshop app runs on each Windows 10 or 11 64-bit PC. The free server application runs on a Windows PC or a supported Windows Server installation and connects the workstations over your local network.

You can use a dedicated server, or use a workstation as the server too. That workstation needs just one paid PC licence.

Is my customer data stored in the cloud?

Your jobs, customers and materials stay in a database on your own workshop server. Choose SQLite or Firebird during setup. Database credentials stay on the server.

Online services handle licence validation and software update distribution. They are separate from your workshop database.

Does ByteCut need an internet connection?

Yes, for periodic licence checks and updates. Licences are checked about every five minutes. If internet access is lost, the app allows up to four hours from the last successful check before it locks licensed access.

The local network and server still need to be available to work with shared jobs. This is not an indefinitely offline licence.

Will it work with our cutting machine?

We check your existing machine files during onboarding. ByteCut can generate a machine XLS workbook, a PRINT workbook and a SHAPES PDF for special operations. Your machine software calculates its own cutting layout.

There is no universal machine or CNC compatibility promise. Send a sample of the files your workshop uses so we can confirm the format.

Can we bring our existing jobs and materials?

Migration can be assessed as part of setup. Existing data is kept separate while it is checked and imported. Transfers between SQLite and Firebird are available only in the local server tools, with backups and verification.

Please share which program and version you use, and a few example import and machine files, before arranging a migration.

Does it calculate prices or produce invoices?

ByteCut compiles quantities: boards, configured half/third sheets, edging metres and cutting Extras. Saved layouts supply the board quantities; missing layouts can be calculated automatically.

It does not calculate monetary quotes, stock prices, VAT or invoices. You can use the quantities in your existing sales process.

How do licences and renewals work?

Each workstation has its own time-limited licence. The server app is free. Licences can be renewed remotely within the licence file’s validity window, up to one year from that file’s creation.

A new licence file must be imported at least annually; we help arrange this. Yearly billing is paid upfront. Access remains subject to the licence terms.

What’s included in the setup fee?

The R999 once-off fee is per workshop. We agree on the standard setup scope with you: server and workstation configuration, existing-data checks, and verifying printing and your machine format.

Unusual migrations, custom integrations or extra work are discussed before going ahead. Purchase questions go to sales; existing users can reach our support email.
